Online Poker History

Online poker first burst onto the scene in the 1990’s with a few ‘play money sites’, but things went to a new level when a poker room called Planet Poker opened its cyber doors and accepted play for real money. Despite there not being the same demand for online poker in the 90’s as there now is, the lure of being able to play poker with the click of a button attracted a lot of players who opted to play online in the comfort of their own homes, rather than visiting casinos. More and more poker sites launched, with many failing along the way and closing down.

In 2001 a new online poker site launched which would change the history of online poker – PokerStars. PokerStars was just like any other online poker room in 2001, vying for players and growing on a daily basis but quickly they established themselves as one of the best online poker rooms and in 2003 they were part of a life-changing event which changed the world of poker for the better. A player Chris Moneymaker qualified for a seat in the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event through a satellite tournament on PokerStars. Remarkably Moneymaker went on to win the Main Event and take down first prize money of $2.5 million. Chris Moneymaker’s story made headlines throughout the world and many ‘average-joes’ decided if it could happen to Moneymaker, it could happen to them, so many of them created an account at PokerStars. This gained PokerStars a lot of exposure and poker throughout the world was experiencing a massive boom. Since then PokerStars has gone on to become the largest online poker site in the world and recently set the record for having the most players online – 307,016 players.
